MJC Tuba Leadpipes
With over 30 years of experience of working on Boosey & Hawkes and British built Sovereign Tubas, Mike has developed leadpipes this give improvements over the standard Imperial/982, and 981 leadpipes. Based on pipes that were made by B&H, but not readily available on production models. The MJC versions are subtly different from the original leadpipes making them unique. The design of the receiver being unique to each model. This enhances the airflow and helps in the smoothing out of the response.
We offer the option of custom bend height for the leadpipe. This helps with the ergonomics of holding the tuba. Moving the mouthpiece to the player, not the player to the mouthpiece.
MJC leadpipe receiver/leadpipe combinations are such that the balance between slotting notes and slurring is a far better balance than the original leadpipes that came with the instrument.
All leadpipes and receivers are hand made here in our workshop in Salford. This ensures consistency of manufacture.
All MJC leadpipes come with a brass receiver as standard. Nickel Silver is available on request at an extra cost.
Due to previous issues with fitting by other technicians, pre bent leadpipes will not be shipped. We will only ship unbent leadpipes.

MJC-SC leadpipe
This leadpipe is based on the leadpipe B&H made for the European market, and was not available on instruments in the UK, other than for the late, great, John Fletcher. It was the pipe on his famous Besson New Standard Eb that he used up until around 1985.
The leadpipe is similar in sound and response to the 783/983 pipe, but better intonation in the higher register.

MJC-03 leadpipe
This leadpipe is a great all-rounder. Developed from a leadpipe, originally on an instrument that was the second of the 19" bell Ebs in the 1960s, owned and developed by the late, Alistair "Jock" Sinclair of the CBSO when he was a student of John Fletchers. "It was as big as I could control before going too big" was what he told me when I asked him about it back in the 90s.
Not as big as a 981 pipe and far more efficient in the 4th valve register where many 981s start to "kick back" when hit hard. Again, with solid intonation in the higher register.

"The leadpipe Mike put on my Eb has the sound of a 981 with the response of a 982"
Le Tsamarklis, London Philharmonic Orchestra
"Fantastic new leadpipe and receiver designed, made, and fitted to my Imperial by Mike Johnson. Mafe to the exact height I requested and blows great! It has really opened up the tuba and has an excellent response.
For me, it has the symphonic sound of a 981, but much easier to blow and sustain across the whole range. Ta Mike.
Ian Foster, Royal Shakespeare Company, English Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Viva.
B&H style BBb leadpipes
This leadpipe matches the MJC-03 EEb leadpipe, with a few subtle variations. It opens up the compensating BBb, making the instrument respond and raising the amount of sound possible before breaking up.
